The La Villa River is considered the Nile of the Azuero Peninsula and its headwaters are found in the Montoso Forest Reserve. It had a short and degraded trail that allowed visitors to experience the unique forest that ended at a beautiful natural freshwater pool. However, there was a lot of potential to expand the trail circuit to allow visitors more time to experience this wonderful landscape. By teaming up with the Peace Corp, a professional trail builder was recruited to help in designing an extension to the existing circuit and training a local cadre of community members in trail building techniques. This all resulted in a beautiful new trail with wayfinding, signage, and benches. This has increased visitation by 100% of which many are local students.
